Rockies minor-league report

System overview
This winter has been a season of change for the Colorado Rockies, with new GM Dan O'Dowd making several key trades, essentially turning over the major league roster and starting over. Part of the reason this was necessary was that the Rockies didn't focus on farm system development very much during the mid-1990s. This made the upper levels of the organization rather thin, making it harder for the team to plug gaps the last couple of years.

The good news is that the last two drafts conducted by the Bob Gebhard regime went pretty well, and that the lower levels of the organization are in better shape. The team is also moving into the international arena more forcefully, expanding their presence in Latin America and starting to grab players from Asia. If they continue to feed talented players into the system in this manner, results should follow.

Colorado tends to look for "tools" oriented players and athletes, as well as pitchers who can keep the ball down. Unfortunately, the thin air of Coors Field, as well as at Triple-A Colorado Springs, makes it difficult for young pitchers to properly develop, a handicap the organization will always contend with.

1999 Minor League W-L Percentage: .472 (ranked 26th)

1999 amateur draft
Looking for quick pitching help, the Rockies drafted Baylor right-hander Jason Jennings in the first round. His fastball is a tick above average, but his slider is outstanding, he throws strikes, and is mentally tough. He'll need that to survive in Coors Field. Second-rounder Ryan Kibler, from high school in Tampa, throws in the low-90s and made a quick adjustment to pro ball.

Third-rounder Josh Bard, a catcher from Texas Tech, signed too late to play, but is excellent defensively and should be adequate with the bat. Fourth-round selection Chuck Crowder, from Georgia Tech, has a live arm but needs to improve his command. Fifth-round pick Chris Testa, from high school in Palmdale, California, and eighth-rounder Greg Catalanotte, from the University of Florida, have promising bats.

Overall, this is a decent draft class. There are no sure stars here, but rather a solid group of guys who could contribute in the majors.

Top prospects
1) Ben Petrick, C: His bat is ready, but the Rockies are reluctant to let him play, due to his still raw defense. He's just 22 and has plenty of time to fix that.

2) Choo Freeman, OF: Outstanding physical specimen, still learning how to play the game. Hit .274 with 14 homers and 16 steals but weak strike zone judgment in the South Atlantic League.

3) Josh Kalinowski, LHP: Throws 88-90 mph with a nasty curveball, struck out 176 and allowed just 119 hits in 162 innings, with 2.11 ERA, in the Carolina League. Can he survive in Colorado?

4) Jody Gerut, OF: Stanford product is a steady performer, not outstanding, but a contributor with both bat and glove. Has a little power, some speed, and a good glove.

5) Brent Butler, 2B: Acquired from Cardinals in Darryl Kile trade. Quick line-drive stroke will help him put up nice numbers in thin air.

Others of note
Juan Pierre, OF: Hit .320 with 66 steals in Carolina League. Power is questionable and he doesn't draw many walks.

Derrick Gibson, OF: Still has the tools, still struggles to use them.

Juan Uribe, SS: Outstanding defensive player, but will have to improve his strike zone judgment as he moves up.

Chin-Hui Tsao, RHP: From Taiwan, throws 95 mph with good mechanics. Will need at least a year and probably more to get used to North American conditions.

Other names to know: Justin Carter, LHP; Shawn Chacon, RHP; Javier Colina, 2B; Mark DiFelice, RHP; Matt Holliday, 3B; Chandler Martin, RHP; Enemencio Pacheco, RHP; Elvis Pena, 2B; Ryan Price, RHP; Rene Reyes, 1B; Todd Sears, 1B; Juan Sosa, SS; Jermaine Van Buren, RHP; Jeff Winchester, C.
