Scouting Report

1999 Season
The 1999 season reconfirmed what the Devil Rays already knew: Aaron Ledesma is a good utility infielder. The problem is, they came to that realization after watching him struggle playing every day at shortstop in the second half, while Kevin Stocker was out with a knee injury. Ledesma missed the first five weeks of the season after hurting his thumb in spring training.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Ledesma brought a .324 career average into 1999, and he hit consistently except for a .178 slump in July. He doesn't offer much in the way of power or speed. Ledesma's main value is his ability to fill in at all four infield positions. His lack of range, however, became painfully apparent when he played shortstop on a regular basis, especially on turf. His arm hasn't been the same since he had shoulder problems while in the minors with the Mets.

2000 Outlook
Ledesma went to Colorado with Rolando Arrojo in the December deal that brought Vinny Castilla to the Devil Rays. He figures to be used in a utility role again, getting most of his time at second base.
