Scouting Report
2000 Season Carlos Perez won more than twice as many games and lowered his ERA by almost two full runs over 1999. Of course, he remained one of the worst pitchers in baseball. After accepting a demotion in April, the southpaw balked at further trips to Triple-A. So rather than eat his contract, the Dodgers shuttled Perez between the rotation and bullpen before September shoulder surgery shut him down.
Pitching, Defense & Hitting Never a hard thrower, Perez has been topping out in the mid-80s the last two years. Because the reduced velocity makes his fastball look too much like his changeup, hitters can sit on one and have time to adjust to the other. While he has good control, he has to nibble so much that he often finds himself behind in the count. His move is mediocre at best. He gets off the mound in good shape, though he can be a bit gangly. He is not a bad hitter, and he rapped out a double and triple last year.
2001 Outlook Perhaps Perez had been suffering shoulder pain the last couple years and just hadn't said anything until it became unbearable. That would explain the horrible performance and severely reduced velocity. The Dodgers owe him $7.5 million, so they will try to get whatever they can out of him.
