Scouting Report
1999 Season From Manny Alexander's perspective, the 1999 season was an absolute disaster. When the trade of Jose Hernandez left the Cubs' shortstop job wide open, Alexander--for whom Cal Ripken was once moved to third base--wasn't given even a cursory look. He made more than half of his appearances as a pinch-hitter and did little else beyond providing infield depth.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Alexander is a notoriously impatient hitter who has trouble making contact and constantly falls behind in the count. He simply lacks the ability to recognize a bad pitch and let it pass. For some reason, he's done quite well as a pinch-hitter during each of the last two seasons. Alexander is quick on the bases and almost never gets caught when he tries to steal. He has good range and a very strong arm, and has filled in capably at second, third and short.
2000 Outlook Alexander has become a bit player rather than a regular-in-waiting. He was traded to the Red Sox for Damon Buford, who will start in center field for the Cubs.
