Scouting Report

1999 Season
Coming back from elbow surgery, Jeff Blauser failed to recapture a starting job despite his $4.2 million salary. He played second base against lefties, pinch-hit and filled in around the infield.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
When healthy, Blauser is a useful hitter who contributes a decent average and some power. The problem is that he's so susceptible to injury that he rarely is able to play an entire season at full strength. His inability to hit at Wrigley Field in a Cubs uniform is a mystery because he hit so well there as a Brave. He never was a top-notch glove man, and his various ailments have left him better suited to a backup role. He has little speed left and rarely runs anymore.

2000 Outlook
It was no surprise when the Cubs declined to pick up Blauser's $7 million option for 2000. His signing by the Cubs can only be described as a colossal and expensive mistake. Teams may be wary, and it will be an upset if anyone entrusts him with a regular job at this point in his career.
