GAME LOG
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- For a change, Kevin Brown was the pitcher on the winning end of a low-scoring game. Brown outdueled Woody Williams with a two-hitter and struck out a career-high 13 Saturday night, as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied past the San Diego Padres 2-1. "That was fun to watch," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. "Williams was outstanding and my guy was just overpowering. He was special. He was a little tired going out there in the ninth, but made great pitches when he had to,." Brown (13-6) pitched his fifth complete game of the season and allowed only three runners. Desi Relaford walked on a 3-2 pitch with one out in the fourth, stole second and scored on Ryan Klesko's hard ground single to right field. Damian Jackson doubled with one out in the ninth and stole third before Brown threw called third strikes past Relaford and Klesko. "It's been a long battle this year, a lot of tight games," said Brown, 6-1 in 14 starts in which he has allowed fewer than two earned runs. "Sometimes it's not the number of pitches, but the number of pitches you throw in situations. "Every pitch in every inning has been possibly the difference in the game, and that can drain on you. That's the mental aspect of it, and it's difficult sometimes to fight. Physically, I thought I was all right. But mentally, sometimes you start to get drained." Brown lowered his ERA to 2.56, second in the league behind Arizona's Randy Johnson. "He's a battler, and every time you go out there and face him, you know you've got a battle on your hands," San Diego's Eric Owens said. "He was locating the ball well and getting ahead of people." Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, the Dodgers converted errors by Klesko at first and Ruben Rivera in center into a pair of unearned runs against Williams (10-7). Tom Goodwin led off with a grounder that Klesko misplayed and took third on Mark Grudzielanek's bloop single to center. Rivera's throw skipped into the Dodgers' dugout as Goodwin scored and Grudzielanek took third. Shawn Green followed with an RBI single. "Both teams were pumped up. Unfortunately, we made a couple of errors in that one inning and it cost us," Owens said. "And when you're facing a guy like Kevin Brown, you're not going to score that many runs." Williams pitched a five-hitter for his fourth complete game, striking out a season high nine batters and walking one.
