Pettitte wins second duel with Martinez

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

BOSTON (AP) -- Pedro Martinez has finally met his match. His name is Andy Pettitte.

For the second time in three months, Pettitte beat baseball's ERA leader and two-time Cy Young award winner in Fenway Park, pitching the New York Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

New York's Scott Brosius hit a three-run homer off Pedro Martinez with two out in the seventh inning Saturday.

"It's nice to beat Boston," Pettitte said. "It doesn't matter who's pitching for the other team. That's really a non-issue."

But Pettitte (18-7) had to be sharp, knowing the Yankees weren't likely to score much against Martinez (16-5), who entered the game with a 1.66 ERA.

Helped by Scott Brosius' three-run homer in the seventh, Pettitte left after eight innings with a 3-1 lead.

"Andy is really the story," Brosius said. "I know he's got to be thinking coming in he's got to pitch real well. To shut them down and keep us in the game was a key."

Jose Canseco's two-run homer off Tim Wakefield in the ninth -- his 14th of the season and 445th of his career -- gave New York a necessary cushion when Boston scored two in the bottom of the inning off Mariano Rivera on a double by Dante Bichette, a triple by Troy O'Leary and a double by Jason Varitek.

During the day, Boston reliever Bryce Florie underwent surgery after sustaining severe damage to his right eyeball when he was hit by a liner the previous night. The drive by Ryan Thompson caused three fractures around Florie's eye socket that will require further surgery.

"Prognosis for reasonable vision is guarded," Red Sox physician Dr. Bill Morgan said.

On June 20, Pettitte pitched 7 2/3 innings in a 3-0 win over Boston when homers hurt Martinez again. He allowed solo shots to Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and Paul O'Neill.

On Saturday, Martinez left after seven innings and 119 pitches, his ERA rising to 1.74.

"The last time he pitched good against me, too," Martinez said after Boston dropped its second straight game of the series. "Roger Clemens, who pitched yesterday (is) one of the best in the game, and Andy Pettitte's right there. You can't expect a lot" of offense.

Pettitte didn't give the Red Sox much.

The only run he allowed came in the third on a single by Jose Offerman and a double by Carl Everett. Pettitte struck out six and allowed one walk and six hits.

"Andy is on a roll," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "He's so confident now. I don't know what I can say. It was a great matchup. It doesn't happen very often."

Pettitte improved to 9-1 in his last 10 starts one day after Clemens went to 8-0 in the past three months with a 4-0 victory. Boston managed 14 hits in the two games and fell eight games behind first-place New York in the AL East and three behind Cleveland in the wild-card race.

"It was a tough loss," Boston catcher Jason Varitek said. "Pettitte is pitching better now than he has in the past. I think he's utilizing the whole plate."

Pettitte agreed.

"After the third inning, I really had everything going," he said after hearing cheers and boos from loud fans at the game with the Yankees chief rival. "I went out today and I started to get goosebumps. It's a playoff atmosphere."

In four games against New York this season, Martinez is 1-2 and has allowed seven runs, six scoring on homers. Pettitte is 2-0 against Boston, allowing one run in 15 2/3 innings.

On Saturday, Martinez's pitch count was getting high, reaching 93 through six innings, when Tino Martinez led off the seventh with a single. Pedro Martinez retired the next two batters, then went to consecutive 3-2 counts for the first time in the game.

Jorge Posada, who struck out in his first two at bats, walked. Martinez went up 0-2 on Brosius and, with the count 1-2, umpire Fieldin Culbreth called the next pitch a ball, which upset the pitcher. After Brosius homered over the left-field wall on a 3-2 pitch, Martinez stood about 20 feet from Culbreth and home plate, as Brosius crossed it. "I thought I had him (struck out). You can't blame the umpire, though. He's human," Martinez said. "I threw a changeup and he hit it out. What can you do?"

Pettitte worked out of several early jams, the last in the fourth when he allowed a two-out double to O'Leary, but Varitek flied out. Pettitte then retired 12 of the next 13 batters, allowing only Varitek's single in the seventh.

Game notes
Jeter extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a sixth-inning single. ... Martinez had at least one strikeout in each of the first five innings. ... Pettitte has pitched at least six innings in each of his last 11 starts and is second to David Wells' 19 wins for most victories in the AL. ... Martinez is 5-4 with a 2.62 ERA against the Yankees in his career.
