Williams: 3-for-4, RBI, 6 IP

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Woody Williams wasn't pitching well, so he turned to his bat.

Williams had three hits and an RBI while struggling to pitch six innings in the San Diego Padres' 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night.

"I'm just glad I could help the team any way I could," Williams said, "because my pitching was horrible."

Williams (9-5) scored San Diego's first run and hit a run-scoring single in the fifth that tied the game at 6.

He is batting .286 (14-for-49) this season with eight RBIs, including .363 (12-for-33) since returning from the disabled list July 2. It was his second three-hit game this year.

"He came up in a situation (in the fifth) where we needed to score," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "If he can't swing the bat the way he does, I'm forced to make a switch."

As for Williams' pitching, he allowed six runs and eight hits, walked five and struck out five.

"My control was all over the place," he said. "I was inconsistent pretty much the whole night."

"He battled out there," Bochy said. . He didn't have his good stuff. It shows you how competitive he is. He did what he had to win the ballgame."

Trevor Hoffman finished with a perfect ninth for his 38th save in 45 chances. Hoffman saved all three games in the series, retiring all nine batters he faced.

John Snyder (3-8) was tagged for seven runs, eight hits and seven walks in four-plus innings. He is 0-6 in 13 starts since June 22.

"He kind of took a step backwards," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said. "It was like he didn't have a feel for any of his pitches tonight."

Richie Sexson was 3-for-4 for Milwaukee with a homer and four RBI.

The crowd of 13,777 was the smallest for a game at San Diego this season.

With Milwaukee leading 6-5 in the fifth, Snyder walked Mike Darr and Desi Relaford, and David Weathers gave up a one-out single.

A walk to Damian Jackson loaded the bases, and Eric Owens drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout.

"I just couldn't throw any first-pitch strikes," Snyder said. "You walk seven guys and this happens."

Sexson's RBI single put the Brewers ahead in the first, and his two-run homer in the third, his 26th of the season and 10th since Milwaukee acquired him from Cleveland on July 28.

San Diego tied the score in the third when Jackson hit a two-run homer and Snyder walked Relaford with the bases loaded, then went ahead 5-3 in the fourth on Owens' RBI single and Dave Magadan's sacrifice.

"It was just a situation where I got a pitch I could handle," Jackson said. "I'm just trying to make amends for a terrible season and salvage what I can."

Milwaukee retook the lead in the fifth on Geoff Jenkins' RBI single, Sexson's run-scoring double and Jeromy Burnitz's RBI single.
