MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Twins' first grand slam of the season came at an opportune time. Minnesota became the last team in the majors to get a slam when Jay Canizaro broke a tie in the fourth inning with a homer that carried the Twins to an 8-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. "That's good, we're on the board," Canizaro said. "It was a good pitch to hit, I'm sure it was a mistake. I was looking for something to drive." Canizaro, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent during the opening week of the season, also had a run-scoring single for a career-high five RBI. Ron Coomer had a three-run homer in the third inning to tie the score. "That was a big hit for him and his team," Detroit's Dean Palmer said of Coomer's 15th homer. "You scrap to get three runs and with one swing of the bat they're back in it." Brad Radke (10-13) reached the 10-win mark for the sixth straight year. He equaled his season-high with nine strikeouts while limiting Detroit to one earned run and six hits in six-plus innings. Radke benefited from an uncharacteristic offensive outburst by his teammates while he was on the mound. In his 28 starts, Minnesota has scored just 110 times, an average of 3.9 runs. "It feels good to get some runs," Radke said. "I got away with some pitches, but I made good pitches when I had to." Bob Wells pitched three innings for his 10th save in 16 opportunities. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead on Juan Encarnacion's run-scoring single in the first and RBI by Bobby Higginson and Juan Gonzalez in the third. Canizaro's home run was his sixth since the Twins signed him as a free agent in April and his second career grand slam. His first was Aug. 21, 1996, against the Mets while playing for San Francisco. The Twins reached Willie Blair (9-4) for eight runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Blair struck out four and walked two before being relieved in the sixth by Matt Anderson. Game notesRadke joins Eric Milton (12) and Mark Redman (12) in double figures for victories. They have 34 wins, while the rest of the Twins have only 24. ... The last time the Twins had three pitchers with ten or more wins was 1993 when Kevin Tapani (12), Willie Banks (11) and Jim Deshaies (11) did it. ... Tom Kelly gave Cristian Guzman a lecture after the shortstop was ejected for pounding his bat into the plate when he was called out on strikes in the sixth inning. "I explained a few facts of life to him," Kelly said. "That conduct's not acceptable, it's embarrassing and we won't tolerate that. He's not going to do that again." ... Billy McMillon has 13 hits in his last 32 at-bats (.406) after going 2-for-4 Friday. ...
