GAME LOG
SEATTLE (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox are still proving themselves.
Mike Sirotka beat Seattle for the second time this month and Herbert Perry had three RBIs as the White Sox beat the slumping Mariners 4-1 Friday night.
Seattle lost its third straight and for the 11th time in 12
games.
"This is our test," Sirotka said. "Every game is critical. I
don't think anybody in here doubts what's at stake."
"That was a huge night for Mike to give us that," White Sox
manager Jerry Manuel said. "He pretty much dominated the middle of
their lineup. He really had good stuff."
The Mariners, who led the AL West by seven games on Aug. 11,
watched their lead over Oakland dwindle to 1½ games. The Athletics
beat the New York Yankees 8-1 Friday night.
The Mariners lost their sixth straight at Safeco Field despite
not making an error for the first time in eight games.
Sirotka (12-10) limited the Mariners to three hits in seven-plus
innings, including an RBI single by Dan Wilson in the second.
The left-hander didn't give up a hit after the second, striking
out five, walking four and committing a balk. He was replaced by
Bobby Howry after walking Wilson to lead off the eighth.
"I had good command down in the strike zone and got a lot of
ground balls," said Sirotka, who got Alex Rodriguez to hit into a
double play in the first and John Olerud to hit into a double play
in the seventh.
"This has got to be fun," Sirotka said. "You wait your whole
life to get to this point."
Keith Foulke came on with the bases loaded and one out in the
ninth. He struck out Mike Cameron and pinch-hitter Stan Javier for
his 23nd save in 28 chances.
Aaron Sele (13-9) dropped his third straight decision during the
Mariners' slide in August, which began after Seattle returned from
winning three of four in Chicago.
Sele gave up four runs and nine hits in 7 1-3 innings, including
three runs in a 28-pitch first inning. After Ray Durham grounded
out, Jose Valentin doubled off left fielder Rickey Henderson's
glove and Sele walked Frank Thomas.
Magglio Ordonez lined out for the second out before Carlos Lee
singled to score Valentin from third. Sele walked Paul Konerko to
load the bases before Perry hit a two-run single to center.
Sele said his walk to Thomas in the first was the key to the
White Sox inning.
"I got behind on him and put him on," Sele said. "You aren't
going to come back from a 2-0, 3-0 count and give him a cookie to
hit. It was an unintentional intentional."
Said Perry: "He's got such a good curveball and he backs it up
with a good fastball. For some reason, I thought he was going to
throw me a curveball and I was ready for it."
In the second, Olerud singled, Chris Widger walked and Wilson hit an RBI single.
The White Sox got a run in the eighth when Perry singled off Jose Paniagua to score Lee from second.
Sele walked two and struck out five.
