SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Russ Ortiz pitched seven shutout innings and drove in the game's only run as the San Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 Tuesday night

Ortiz (7-10) repeated the feat of teammates Shawn Estes and Livan Hernandez, who each drove in runs the previous two days, by singling in the fifth to score J.T. Snow, who walked to start the inning.

Brewers' left fielder Geoff Jenkins dove forward in an attempt to snare Ortiz's hit, but the ball glanced off the top of his glove.

Felix Rodriguez and Robb Nen each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to preserve the shutout. Nen recorded his 28th save in 33 opportunities.

Ortiz retired the first 12 batters he faced, giving up a leadoff double to Richie Sexson in the fifth. He allowed one other hit _ a single by Milwaukee pitcher Jamey Wright in the sixth. He struck out six and walked one.

Ortiz, who does not have a shutout in 68 career starts, won his third straight at home after beginning the season 0-4 in eight starts at Pac Bell Park.

Wright (6-5) was nearly as effective. He gave up four hits and four walks in seven innings and struck out three.

After allowing a one-out single to Bill Mueller in the first, Wright retired 10 in a row before walking Snow. Three of his walks came in the fifth.

Wright, who lost his third straight road game, avoided further damage in the seventh with two defensive plays. He fielded two difficult comebackers, by Felipe Crespo and Marvin Benard, and threw them out at first with two runners on.

The Brewers did not get a runner past second against Ortiz.

Notes: Brewers manager Davey Lopes missed the game with the flu. Bench coach Jerry Royster ran the team. ... Giants RHP John Johnstone threw 70 pitches on the side before the game, but there's still no timetable for his return. ... The Brewers signed Matthew Yeatman, their 13th-round selection in June's draft. ... Giants RHP Joe Nathan threw five innings in a rehab assignment for Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday in Tacoma. He allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
