DENVER (AP) -- Eric Karros tied the game with a three-run homer
in the seventh, so when he came up again in the eighth the Colorado
Rockies pitched carefully to him.
So carefully that Rockies reliever Jose Jimenez walked Karros,
loading the bases for Adrian Beltre, who lined a two-run single to
lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-4 victory Tuesday night.
"I've been having a tough time with the bases loaded," Beltre
said. "I can't figure out why. I've got only two, maybe three
hits. With the bases loaded and two outs, I knew this was my big
moment and a time that I have to step up."
Beltre's hit also atoned for an error in the second inning that
helped the Rockies score three runs.
"To be the guy who was responsible for their first couple of
runs, it was my chance to get some back and give Chan Ho (Park) a
chance to win."
Park (11-7) pitched seven strong innings, allowing seven hits
and four runs, two earned.
"Chan Ho pitched brilliantly the whole game. We didn't make the
plays in the field," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said, referring
to his team's three errors. "He didn't give an inch, and that to
me was the key to winning the game."
Karros' homer, his 27th, tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh off
Masato Yoshii.
The Dodgers loaded the bases in the eighth on three walks, one
of them intentional, and Beltre singled up the middle. Bobby
Chouinard (0-1), who walked the first two batters in the inning,
took the loss.
"Beltre is a good player now, but he's going to be a great
player," Johnson said.
The slumping Rockies have lost 17 of their last 20 games. Since
climbing a club-record 12 games over .500 on July 3, they have
fallen to 48-50.
"We just can't seem to get over the hump," Rockies manager
Buddy Bell said. "Obviously our players are not feeling good about
things. But I really believe this thing can turn around just as
easily as it went bad."
Except for Karros' homer, Yoshii was effective, allowing six
hits and four runs in seven innings.
"Yoshii was very good," Bell said. "That's the kind of
performance we need, and unfortunately we couldn't hold onto the
lead. He did his job."
Shawn Green led off the second with a solo homer, his 17th.
Colorado countered in its half, barely hitting the ball out of
the infield in scoring three runs, only one of them earned.
Todd Helton led off with a walk and went to third on Jeffrey
Hammonds' single. With one out, Ben Petrick hit a grounder to
third. Beltre bobbled the ball for an error, and first baseman
Karros lost Beltre's throw in the sun that sets over the left-field
corner of Coors Field for another error, allowing Helton to score.
Hammonds scored on Yoshii's groundout, and Petrick scored on Tom
Goodwin's infield single off Park's glove.
Park twice led off innings with hits but was erased on double
plays both times.
In the sixth, Park doubled off the wall in right-center and went
to third on Todd Hollandsworth's fly ball to right. Park then tried
to score on Mark Grudzielanek's medium-range fly ball to right, but
he was cut down at home by Larry Walker's throw when catcher
Petrick blocked Park off the plate with his left foot.
Colorado went ahead 4-1 in the sixth when Walker produced a run
with aggressive baserunning. He lined a hit to center and continued
on to second, forcing a hurried, high throw by Hollandsworth that
sailed toward the dugout, allowing Walker to reach third. Jeff
Cirillo followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Dodgers tied it in the seventh on Karros' homer, his 17th
career homer at Coors Field -- a record for a Rockies' opponent.
Gary Sheffield led off with a walk. Green's hard grounder to second
-- a potential double-play ball -- was booted by Mike Lansing for an
error, and Karros followed with a 433-foot shot to left-center.
Lansing and Petrick singled with no outs in the Rockies' half,
but Park wriggled out of the jam. Karros threw out Lansing at third
on Yoshii's attempted sacrifice bunt, and Park retired the next two
batters on a popup and fly ball.
Jeff Shaw pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 22 chances.
Game notes
Before the game, the Rockies placed right-handed reliever
Mike DeJean on the 15-day DL (strained oblique muscle in his right
side), gave right-hander Stan Belinda his outright release and
recalled right-handers David Lee and Giovanni Carrara from Triple-A
Colorado Springs. ... Los Angeles has won eight of its last 11
games. ... Yoshii had lost his previous four starts. ... The
Dodgers and Rockies are in the midst of playing six games over a
nine-day period. They will meet again Sept. 8 in Denver to begin
seven games over 10 days.
