ATLANTA (AP) -- With a classic lesson in damage control, Tom
Glavine put himself in position for his 200th victory.
Glavine took scattering to the extreme Tuesday night, giving up
11 hits -- all singles -- in 6 2/3 innings but still picking up No.
199 as the Atlanta Braves held on to beat the Florida Marlins 6-5.
"I thought I was throwing good," said Glavine, a two-time Cy
Young winner who improved his career record to 199-121. "They hit
some good pitches. It was a lot more difficult night than it should
have been."

It didn't get any easier after he left with a 6-3 lead. Mike
Remlinger gave up an RBI single to Cliff Floyd in the seventh,
Scott Kamieniecki got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and Kerry Ligtenberg gave up a leadoff homer in the ninth to Floyd, who
drove in three runs in all.
With two outs, Derrek Lee tripled off the center-field wall,
missing a game-tying homer by about two feet. But Ligtenberg held
on for his ninth save, striking out Mark Smith.
"I knew he hit it good," Ligtenberg said of Lee's drive.
"When I saw Andruw (Jones) getting close to the wall, I was a
little worried. I didn't throw a whole lot of good pitches, but the
best pitch I made was the last pitch."
Florida outhit the Braves 15-6 but left 11 runners on base and
made five errors, tying a team record.
Glavine (12-5) escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth,
getting nemesis Mike Redmond to hit into a double play that kept
the score at 3-3. Javy Lopez hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in
the bottom half.
"That was pretty much the game right there," Glavine said.
"You don't ever think you're going to get out of a situation like
that without giving up a run."
Now, he'll go for his landmark win at home Sunday against the
Houston Astros.
"Maybe things will go as well as they did tonight," Glavine
said. "Hopefully, it will be a little easier."
Florida starter Ryan Dempster (9-8) allowed only four hits in
six innings. He was hurt by two unearned runs, but made the worst
mistake himself against his next-to-last batter.
With two outs and two runners on, Dempster tried to sneak a
fastball by Lopez, who sent it over the 380-foot sign in left for
his 16th homer of the season.
The Marlins, on the other hand, couldn't take advantage of all
their opportunities.
"You're talking to a manager whose team stole 10 bases (against
San Diego on May 18) and still lost the game," Florida's John
Boles said. "That's part of our charm -- our unpredictability."
The Marlins started off with three straight singles against
Glavine. Floyd drove in his first run and Mike Lowell added an RBI
hit.
But the Braves quickly tied it up, benefiting from a pair of
errors in the first. Rafael Furcal led off with bunt single and
went to second on Dempster's errant pickoff throw. Andruw Jones
followed with a grounder to shortstop, which was botched by Alex
Gonzalez for another error. Chipper Jones brought home both runners
with a double to the gap in right-center.
Gonzalez's RBI hit in the second pushed Florida back ahead 3-2,
only to have the Marlins get burned again by the speedy Furcal in
the third. The rookie stole second with two outs, took third when
Redmond's throw sailed aid Furcal, who has been bothered by a sore
hamstring. "When my legs are good, I can do everything on the
field."
Florida squandered a great chance in the sixth after loading the
bases on three straight hits. Smith dribbled a grounder in front of
the plate, allowing Glavine to get a force at home. Redmond, who
was hitting .722 in his career against the Atlanta pitcher,
followed with a nearly identical grounder, which Glavine flipped
home for another force.
Lopez threw to first to complete the double play, but the ball
deflected off Redmond's left arm. However, umpire Tim McClelland
ruled correctly that Redmond was running inside the base path,
resulting in the third out.
"I wasn't really paying attention to where I was running,"
Redmond said. "They don't call that very often."
Game notes
Braves RF Brian Jordan left after the eighth inning with a
twisted right knee and sprained right ankle. ... Redmond went
1-for-3 against Glavine, dropping his career average against the
Atlanta pitcher to .667 (14-of-21). ... Florida has lost four in a
row. ... The Braves are 9-3 since the All-Star break, despite a
rash of injuries. ... Glavine surrendered leadoff singles in five
of his eight innings.
