SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- J.T. Snow showed he can still hit
American League pitching, and he can hit left-handed pitching.
Snow, who spent four years with the California Angels, hit two
home runs, including the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning, and
finished with five RBI as the San Francisco Giants defeated the
Texas Rangers 10-8 Monday night.
| | San Francisco's J.T. Snow, left, celebrates with Barry Bonds, center, and Ellis Burks after hitting his second home run of the game. |
Snow, the career leader in interleague RBI with 69, tied a
career high for RBI with his ninth career multihomer game, his
first since July 2, 1998, at Anaheim.
"I don't have an answer for it," Snow said of his success in
interleague play. "It may have been a big deal at first, but now I
have as many at-bats in the National League as I do in the American
League."
Marvin Benard also homered as the Giants won for the 12th time
in 14 games.
Rafael Palmeiro hit his 24th homer of the season for the
Rangers, the 385th of his career, tying him with Dwight Evans for
37th in major league history.
Luis Alicea's sacrifice fly in the seventh capped a three-run
rally and gave the Rangers a 5-4 lead. Royce Clayton and David
Segui also drove in runs in the inning.
Livan Hernandez (8-7) allowed five runs on eight hits with a
walk and five strikeouts in seven innings.
Alicea hit a one-out run-scoring double off John Johnstone, and Rusty
Greer followed with a two-run double in the ninth off Robb Nen, who
got the final two outs for his 21st save in 26 chances.
Doug Davis (3-2) took the defeat after allowing Snow's second
homer, his 13th of the season. The left-handed Davis retired 11
consecutive batters before walking Barry Bonds with one out in the
seventh. Ellis Burks followed with a single before Snow hit a 1-0
pitch into the left-field bleachers.
"It feels good to beat the percentages," said Snow, who gave
up switch-hitting last year to bat exclusively from the left side.
"It's still something special to me to hit off a lefty. It's still
new to me."
Snow is hitting .291 against left-handers this season.
"He's a good player," Texas manager Johnny Oates said of Snow.
"I've seen J.T. for a long time. Maybe one of the best moves he's
made was to stop switch-hitting. Sometimes if you struggle from one
side, then give it up, you become a better offensive player. He's
one of those who has benefited"
Rangers starter Ryan Glynn came off the 15-day disabled list and
allowed four runs on six hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Glynn did not go on a rehab assignment and hadn't pitched in 15
days.
"I felt a little rusty and I didn't have my best stuff, but I
battled," Glynn said. "I got the ball up a little to Snow."
The Giants scored three runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
Benard led off with his eighth homer, hitting a 1-0 pitch over the
center-field wall. Two outs later, Burks walked and Snow hit the
first pitch from Glynn over the left-field fence.
Palmeiro hit a two-run homer to left in the first inning to give
the Rangers an early lead, scoring Rusty Greer, who doubled.
Bobby Estalella's run-scoring groundout in the second cut the lead to
2-1.
The Giants added three runs in the eighth on Burks' run-scoring double,
Rich Aurilia's sacrifice fly and Bill Mueller's run-scoring
single.
