Cirillo brings Rockies' losing streak to an end

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- Jeff Cirillo didn't expect an easy ending to the Colorado Rockies' 11-game losing streak.

Cirillo's single with two outs in the 10th inning scored Tom Goodwin with the winning run as Colorado beat the Oakland Athletics 10-9 Monday night and gained a split of a day-night doubleheader.

"I knew it wasn't going to be easy," said the third baseman, who also began an inning-ending double play in the top of the inning. "We'd been playing good teams during the losing streak. We need to play them more like we did in the first half."

Goodwin drew a two-out walk off Jason Isringhausen, who then walked Brian Hunter. Scott Service replaced Isringhausen and gave up Cirillo's liner to left-center that scored Goodwin.

"I don't think I've ever had a hit off Scott Service before," Cirillo said. "It was a slider down and away and I've had success with that pitch."

Mike DeJean (4-1) pitched a scoreless 10th for Colorado, which had not won since beating San Diego on July 3.

"That was a great win," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "The way we did it made it that much nicer."

The Rockies tied it in the ninth when Cirillo, Todd Helton and Todd Walker hit consecutive singles off Isringhausen.

Isringhausen (4-3), who blew his fourth save after earning his 20th in the opener, escaped further damage by striking out pinch-hitter Jeffrey Hammonds and getting Ben Petrick to ground out.

Jason Giambi's two-out two-run single in the ninth gave Oakland a short-lived 9-8 lead.

The Athletics trailed 8-7 when Terrence Long reached on an infield single and Randy Velarde singled off Gabe White. Both runners moved up on Petrick's passed ball and scored on Giambi's liner past second baseman Todd Walker.

"I am thinking more and more that has made me a more selective hitter," Giambi said. "I looked for the pitch I wanted and drove it hard."

Colorado rallied from a 7-6 deficit on Neifi Perez's two-out, two-run double in the eighth after Oakland went ahead in the top half on Miguel Tejada's two-out three-run homer.

The Rockies, who trailed 4-0, were held hitless for 5 1/3 innings by Ariel Prieto before pinch-hitter Mike Lansing tripled off the center-field wall. Two batters later, Prieto lost his shutout on Hunter's run-scoring single. Helton singled to score Hunter and cut it to 4-2.

Colorado went ahead 6-4 when Goodwin broke out of a 3-for-28 slump with a seventh-inning grand slam -- his second of the season.

The Athletics took a 2-0 lead in the first on Jason Giambi's run-scoring double and Matt Stairs' run-scoring single.

Long homered off the upper-deck facade in right field leading off the third, and Ben Grieve gave Oakland a 4-0 lead with his 17th homer to start the sixth.

In the first game, Olmedo Saenz had three hits, including a double and home run, and four RBI, and Jeremy Giambi added a two-run homer as the A's beat Colorado 11-10.

Game notes
The A's optioned right-handed pitcher Chad Harville to Sacramento prior to the game Monday to make room for Marcus Jones. ... Hammonds did not start either game because of the flu. ... The start of the second game was delayed 30 minutes because of rain.
