GAME LOG
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- To Randy Johnson, another dominating effort was merely another day of work.
| | Johnson now has 128 career double-digit strikeout games, second only to Nolan Ryan's 215. |
"I don't rate my starts, I just pitch to win ballgames,"
Johnson said after winning his third straight start Friday night,
striking out 11 in Arizona's 3-1 victory over San Francisco.
Damian Miller lined a two-out, two-run double in the ninth
inning to hand the Giants their sixth straight loss.
"His stuff is ridiculous," said Miller, "every time I catch
him. He's 36 years old, and thrown I don't know how many innings in
his big league career, but he just keeps getting better. His
command is unreal."
The Giants, swept by Los Angeles in their inaugural series at
Pacific Bell Park, are 0-4 in their new stadium. The six-game skid
is San Francisco's longest since September 1996.
"We don't feel like we're in a slump," Giants manager Dusty
Baker said. "Our time is going to come. Just like they say, it's
the darkest before the dawn."
Johnson (3-0) continued his early-season brilliance, allowing
five hits without a walk in his second complete game. The NL Cy
Young winner has struck out 34 in 26 2/3 innings this season.
Erubiel Durazo hit a leadoff single in the ninth against Livan
Hernandez (0-3) and pinch-runner Hanley Frias moved up on a
sacrifice bunt. Travis Lee reached on an infield single to put
runners at the corners.
After Frias was thrown out at the plate on Lenny Harris'
grounder back to the mound, Miller doubled.
Lee put the Diamondbacks up 1-0 with his third home run of the
season in the second.
Johnson allowed only one hit through 5 2/3 innings. Calvin
Murray, who had singled in the fourth, singled again in the sixth
and scored on Bill Mueller's double down the left-field line to tie
it at 1.
Hernandez walked two and struck out five in a complete-game
loss.
"Livan was matching him," Baker said. "He threw great
tonight. They both threw great tonight. This is a tough one to
lose."
The Giants nearly took the lead in the eighth when Hernandez
blooped a two-out single and Murray reached on an infield single.
Mueller's hard ground ball up the middle was snared by Johnson to
end the threat.
Murray had three of San Francisco's five hits, but Barry Bonds
took Johnson to the warning track with two 400-foot fly outs to
center.
"Those balls Barry Bonds hit," Johnson said, "if they were hit to right field, they'd probably be in the ocean."
Game notes Only three left-handed
hitters have faced Johnson this year (Barry Bonds, Rico Brogna,
Brian Giles), going a combined 0-for-11. ... OF Luis Gonzalez has a
career .345 batting average (57-for-165) with three homers and 30
RBIs in San Francisco. ... The Giants optioned RHP Ben Weber to
Triple-A Fresno of the Pacific Coast League before the game. He was
0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in six appearances with San Francisco. The
Giants recalled RHP Scott Linebrink from Fresno.
