PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Al Martin returned to the Padres for the first time since being jailed Monday night and went 2-for-2 as San Diego beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Thursday.

Martin, charged with assault in a domestic violence case, singled to right in the first inning and hit a ground-rule double to right-center in the third, both off Armando Reynoso, before leaving the game.

Pinch-hitter Dave Magadan had a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.

Arizona right-hander Erik Sabel (0-1) didn't retire a batter in the ninth. Mike Darr led off with a walk, Wiki Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and John Roskos hit a hard single to left field to load the bases for Magadan.

Diamondbacks closer Matt Mantei, making his third appearance since he missed a week with an ankle injury, blew the save in the eighth inning. David Newhan hit a first-pitch home run to right-center with two outs to tie the game at 4.

Reynoso allowed one run on four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five.

Tony Womack was 2-for-4 with three RBI. He had a two-run single against Brian Boehringer in the second inning and an RBI double off Brian Meadows (1-0) in the seventh to put Arizona ahead 4-3.

The Padres used only two pitchers. Boehringer, who had been battling soreness in his right shoulder, started and went three innings, allowing Jay Bell's first-inning homer. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk. Meadows, also a right-hander who will round out the bottom of the rotation, went the final six innings and allowed a run on five hits.
