The Life

November 19, 2001
All-Samoans
ESPN The Magazine

The talent base is so thick these days, you could select a All-America team of Samoan natives. Since there was no movie on my flight back from California last week, I did:

QB: Aso Pogi, Oklahoma State -- Not Marques Tuiasosopo, but his arm is stronger and his 11-5 TD-INT rate isn't bad.
RB: Ed Ieremia-Stansbury, UCLA (below, right) -- Rugged blocker, decent hands from prep track standout.
WR: Reno Mahi, BYU -- Shifty junior halued in 67 passes for unbeaten Cougars.
WR: Tuati Wooden, San Jose State -- Unheralded soph caught 23 passes for Spartans.
WR: Tafiti Uso, Hawaii -- Former Stanford Cardinal caught two TDs for the 'bows.
TE: Gabriel Po'u Reid, BYU -- Part of the Cougars' collection of skilled TEs.
OL: Makoa Freitas, Arizona -- Mauler with an NFL future.
OL: Toniu Fonoti, Nebraska -- Huskers' best lineman ever. Enough said.
OL: Keoki Fraser, Arizona -- Agile youngster should be a future star.
OL: Dan Vili Waldrop, Nebraska -- Big soph should be a first-rounder someday.
OL: Chris Fe'esago, San Jose State -- Roadgrader type is a four-year starter.

DE: Anthony Weaver, Notre Dame (below) -- Best player on ND team will have long NFL career.
DT: Jerry Togiai, K-State -- Heart of Wildcat run defense.
DT: Lauvale Sape, Utah -- Had 11 TFLs for a very underrated D.
DE: Anton Palepoi, UNLV -- The 6-4, 275-pound senior finished with 4.5 sacks.
LB: Joe Siofele, Arizona -- Has potential to be all Pac-10, but still developing.
LB: Justin Ena, BYU -- Made team-high 93 tackles while leading a pretty decent BYU defense.
LB: Zach Tuiasosopo, Washington -- U-Dub's #6 tackler (40 stops) will follow Marques into NFL in two years.
LB: Eti Tuala, Ark. State -- His 55 tackles and tough play made running vs. ASU not so easy.
LB/S: Keani Alapa, Hawaii -- Versatile 6'0", 222-pound soph had 33 tackles and broke up four passes.
DB: Troy Polamalu, USC -- The best Trojan (team-best 98 tackles) never stops hitting and deserves all-Pac-10.
DB: Matt Manuma, Hawaii -- Frosh looked ready to make an impact for UH before knee injury ruined season.
