Kentucky Derby chart corrected, shifting five in stretch

How the Derby was won

Kentucky Derby chart revised again

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Equibase has once again revised the official chart for the Kentucky Derby, altering the positions of three horses with a quarter-mile left to run, including A P Valentine, the second-place finisher in the Preakness Stakes.

Also affected by the latest changes were Jamaican Rum and Fifty Stars. A P Valentine was placed 14th with a quarter-mile to run, instead of 13th. Fifty Stars was placed 13th instead of 14th. And Jamaican Rum was placed 12th, six lengths ahead of the 13th place horse at the mile call, instead of only one length ahead.

The changes have the effect of putting A P Valentine two lengths farther back with a quarter-mile to run than in the latest version of the chart, which was a revision of the chart released just after the Derby was run.

Because of the changes, A P Valentine's running line in the past performance data produced for the Preakness Stakes included an error. A P Valentine went on to finish second in the Preakness. Fifty Stars and Jamaican Rum did not run in the Preakness.

In the first revision, A P Valentine and Fifty Stars were reversed at the stretch call, with one-eighth of a mile to run. Three other horses, Balto Star, Songandaprayer, and Arctic Boy, were affected by that revision as well. Those horses have not run since the Derby.
