Monarchos Gets Revenge, Wins Derby
Many lost faith in Monarchos after he was soundly beaten by Congaree in the April 14 Wood Memorial. But the Florida Derby winner proved the doubters wrong, capturing Kentucky Derby 127 in a time of 1:59 4/5 -- just two-fifths of a second slower than the legendary Secretariat's 1973 track record. Runner-up Invisible Ink's rider, John Velazquez, claimed foul against Monarchos' jockey, Jorge Chavez, but it was disallowed. Favored Point Given, never a threat, finished fifth.
