STOCK UP: Purdue, Georgia Tech win tournaments
Purdue -- Give Purdue and coach Gene Keady credit for winning the Great Alaska Shootout! The Boilermakers knocked off Duke 78-68 in the championship game. Guard Kenneth Lowe scored 22 points against the Blue Devils and is my PTPer of the week. Keady has more energy than a lot of 25-year-olds, baby!

Georgia Tech -- How about a salute to Georgia Tech! When looking at the Preseason NIT pairings, how many people really picked the Yellow Jackets to win the event? Coach Paul Hewitt did a super job of preparing his team for victories over No. 1 Connecticut and coach Robert Montgomery Knight's Texas Tech team. B.J. Elder was outstanding in leading Tech to the winner's circle. Georgia Tech was flat-out brilliant at Madison Square Garden!

Boston Red Sox -- What about the Red Sox acquiring starter Curt Schilling from the Arizona Diamondbacks? Now Boston has a rotation of Pedro Martinez, Schilling and Derek Lowe -- that's pretty impressive.

Miami Dolphins -- The Dolphins showed a lot by putting up 40 points against the Dallas Cowboys and coach Bill Parcells' defense in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day.

Two NBA guards -- Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson scored 50 points against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday while Detroit Pistons guard Richard Hamilton put up 44 against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.

QB Quincy Richard -- Southern University quarterback Quincy Richard was 34-of-42 for 552 yards and five touchdowns vs. Grambling.

STOCK DOWN: Auburn president sets bad example
Auburn president William Walker -- Walker set a bad example by interviewing Louisville's Bobby Petrino for the Tigers' football head-coaching job while Tommy Tuberville is still employed. What kind of message does that send? Now Tuberville has been invited back to serve as Auburn coach. But if I were him, I'd tell Walker to take the job and stick it.

Nebraska football -- Nebraska fired football coach Frank Solich after he went 9-3 this season and 58-19 over the past six years. Nebraska even played in a national-championship game under Solich, but it wasn't enough. The athletic director said it was time to go in a different direction. Give me a break! It's all about winning now, and this sends a bad message to coaches, to just do whatever it takes to get victories. Is this really what college athletics is coming to?

Bucs, Giants -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants are major disappointments, and it appears both teams will miss out on the postseason.

Connecticut, Duke, Syracuse -- All three hoop teams fell from the unbeaten ranks.
