Stock Watch: FAST-GLANCE WEEK IN REVIEW
Nov. 17 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down...
STOCK UP: Jameer, Saint Joseph's start strong at MSG
Jameer Nelson -- Guard Jameer Nelson and Saint Joseph's were so impressive in beating Gonzaga at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Nelson (of Chester, Pa.) was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double. I loved seeing him in person -- he is something special. Pound for pound, inch for inch, he's the best player in America. Also give the fans from Hawk Hill credit for buying more than 4,000 tickets and bringing up busloads of fans from the Philly area to Madison Square Garden.
Cincinnati Bengals -- The Bengals handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season, as promised by wide receiver Chad Johnson. Coach Marvin Lewis' Bengals are 5-5 and trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 1990. Lewis has done a phenomenal job.
Bill Belichick -- It was Belichick over Parcells in the Battle of the Bills as the New England Patriots moved to 8-2 by shutting out the Dallas Cowboys (now 7-3).
Lee Evans -- Wisconsin wide receiver Lee Evans had a great game vs. Michigan State: 258 receiving yards and five touchdowns as the Badgers won in a rout.
San Francisco Giants -- The Giants made a great move, acquiring All-Star catcher A.J. Pierzynski from the Twins.
Los Angeles Clippers -- The Clippers have won four in a row for coach Mike Dunleavy. The Q-man, Quentin Richardson, has been on fire, averaging 26.3 ppg in those four Ws. I didn't think the Clippers could beat an ESPN All-Star team, baby!
STOCK DOWN: Magic doing a disappearing act
Orlando Magic -- The Magic have lost nine in a row. Yes, coach Doc Rivers' team is struggling. Tracy McGrady can't do it alone (he did score 51 points in a loss last week).
St. John's fans -- St. John's basketball fans bought too few tickets to the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden. There is no buzz around the Red Storm program right now. The school received 600 tickets and gave back over 100. How can there be no support before you've suffered an L? Playing a team that made the Final Four last year, there should have been some crowd support.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- The Bucs are now 4-6 after suffering their third straight loss, a disappointing 20-13 home loss to the Green Bay Packers. It looks like the Bucs won't make the playoffs.
Minnesota Vikings -- The Vikings have dropped four in a row, losing the past two weeks to the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. Ever since owner Red McCombs went into the locker room, upset after that first loss, things have gone downhill for the Vikings.
Buffalo Bills -- The Bills have lost three in a row, totaling just 21 points in those three defeats.
Major League Baseball -- I can't understand Major League Baseball's new proposed steroid punishments ... what a joke. You have to get caught five times to be suspended for a year ... come on! If you make the same mistake twice, there must be some intent, so why not make the penalties harsher to serve as a deterrent? That's some message being sent by baseball. Give me a break, it is a flat-out joke. Shame on you, MLB!
