Stock Watch: FAST-GLANCE WEEK IN REVIEW
Oct. 27 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down...
STOCK UP: Marlins claim second World Series title
Florida Marlins -- The Marlins are World Series champions, baby, for the second time (they also won in 1997). Florida beat Barry Bonds and the Giants in the NLDS, Sammy Sosa and the Cubs in the NLCS, and then finished off the Yankees. What a performance by Marlins starter Josh Beckett in Game 6 -- throwing a shutout at Yankee Stadium! Give manager Jack McKeon credit for turning things around after he was hired in May (following the dismissal of Jeff Torborg). McKeon is the oldest manager to win the World Series. Hey, Jack, enjoy your new 500 SL Mercedes -- you should get a multi-year deal, baby! Senior citizens salute you, Mr. McKeon.
QB Marc Bulger -- The St. Louis Rams' quarterback is doing a great job. He threw for 375 yards as the Rams beat the Steelers on Sunday.
New York Giants -- After everybody buried them, the Giants upset the previously unbeaten Minnesota Vikings as QB Kerry Collins threw for 375 yards.
RB Stephen Davis -- The Carolina Panthers' running back ran for 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Carolina beat New Orleans in overtime. What a year for the 6-1 Panthers!
Tampa Bay Lightning -- The Lightning are unbeaten, the only NHL team with a perfect record (6-0).
STOCK DOWN: Hokies caught looking ahead?
Virginia Tech -- The Hokies were routed at West Virginia on Wednesday. Now Miami comes to Blacksburg to visit Virginia Tech this week.
RB Corey Dillon -- Dillon said he wanted to be traded from the Cincinnati Bengals -- after the trade deadline. He said the team wasn't using him enough and he wanted the ball more. Hey, Corey, shut up and play football! Now the Bengals are winning some games, so go out and earn your paycheck.
Pittsburgh Steelers -- The Steelers lost five games all of last season. Coach Bill Cowher's team is now 2-5 after falling to the Rams.
San Francisco 49ers -- What's up with the Niners? They blew out the Bucs last week, then lost to the Arizona Cardinals in overtime on Sunday.
Penn State -- The Nittany Lions are 2-6, and coach Joe Paterno is about to suffer his third losing season in four years.
