I've learned several things regarding the Bob Knight situation.

Now that Texas Tech has relieved coach James Dickey of his duties, the door is open for Knight to consider taking over at the Lubbock-based school. My feeling is that the school will finalize a package that will excite Knight.

The opportunity to compete in a quality conference like the Big 12 would help keep Knight stimulated.

My sources have told me the potential deal would exceed what Knight made in his previous high at Indiana.

Knight has refused to discuss any employment with Texas Tech until the administration announces a decision regarding its current coaching situation.

I firmly believe, based on conversations with several of Knight's friends, that the Texas Tech program would be a good fit. Knight would be excited with the opportunity, plus he would have a close ally in his immediate supervisor, Gerald Myers. I expect little news on this front until Knight visits Lubbock, which should happen sometime next week. He has to check out the area to determine where he would live before making any final decision on any offer from Texas Tech.

The new facility in Lubbock, coupled with the opportunity to compete in a quality conference like the Big 12, would help keep Knight stimulated. Think about it: Knight against Roy Williams, Eddie Sutton, Larry Eustachy, Kelvin Sampson and his former assistant, Dave Bliss. That would make for an interesting set of challenges.

Reports of Knight lawsuit overblown
As for the reports that Knight is filing a lawsuit against Indiana University, my sources tell me that is not valid. What he simply did was file a letter which gives him the right to retain the opportunity to sue in the event of no settlement between the school and the coach. His contractual situation in regard to money owed is still unsettled.

Lawyer Russell Yates simply filed the letter because of a deadline. Failure to do so would have negated any opportunity for future legal action.

I'm also told that Knight's son, Patrick, was notified by Indiana school trainer Tim Garl of his dismissal. Garl stated that AD Clarence Doninger informed him that the younger Knight would not be retained as an assistant coach.

Pat Knight has not been compensated by Indiana University since his dismissal. He did not quit as an assistant coach in Bloomington. That is a concern to his father.

Bob Knight continues to make news. Texas Tech is probably happy to be in the headlines.
