RALEIGH, N.C. -- LaTonya Sims scored 22 points, leading five
Wisconsin players in double figures, as the Badgers (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today; No. 16 Associated Press) beat
Elon 102-49 in the consolation game of the GlaxoWellcome
Invitational on Sunday.
Jessie Stomski added 17 for Wisconsin (1-1), while Emily Asbaugh
and Kyle Black each had 12 and Tamara Moore 10.
Janis Hepburn topped Elon (0-2) with eight points.
The Phoenix shot only 20-for-63 and couldn't cope with
Wisconsin's average 3-inch-per-player height advantage.
Wisconsin out-rebounded Elon 50-33, led by Nina Smith's nine.
The Badgers shot 35-for-69 from the floor.
Stomski and Sims scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, in the
first half when Wisconsin took a 43-21 lead. Sims opened the second
half with seven consecutive points in the opening 1:55.
Elon never got closer than 58-26 in the final 15 minutes as
Wisconsin steadily pulled away.
Elon led 16-13 before Wisconsin took control with an 18-4 run
during a 6:47 span. The Badgers scored 14 points off their fastbreak during the spurt, getting four each from Stomski and Asbaugh.
Wisconsin last topped 100 points Nov. 17, 1998, in a 103-90
overtime victory over California-Santa Barbara.
