AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) -- Mari McClure scored a career-high 35
points, and Tiffany Bell had 22 of her 28 in the second half as
Buffalo upset No. 22 North Carolina 95-89 Friday night in the
opener for both.
It was the first win over a Top-25 team in Buffalo's history.
The victory also extended Buffalo winning streak in home openers to
10.
Juana Brown led North Carolina with 26 points, and Jennifer
Thomas had 20.
The Bulls led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but
North Carolina, went on a 23-8 run that cut the advantage to one
with 7:48 remaining. A minute and a half later, the Tar Heels took
a 67-66 lead -- their first lead since 7-6.
But Buffalo responded, with Bell scoring the next nine points as
the Bulls pulled ahead 75-69. The Tar Heels helped out, with Thomas
and LaQuanda Barksdale fouling out in the final minutes.
Barksdale -- who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring
with an average of 17.6 -- finished with 11 points.
