Who are the league's top threesomes?

ESPN.com

Glenn Robinson
Big Dog Glenn Robinson and the Bucks score plenty of points.
Fred Carter could've used the help of two other scorers on that 1972-73 Philadelphia team which lost a record 73 games. The year before, when the Sixers won 30 games, Carter, Billy Cunningham and Bob Rule were a decent threesome. But that's nothing like what's happening in the NBA today.

After a week of talking about rookies, Fred discusses the five best NBA threesomes in this week's Mad Dog's Top Five. Don't just look at the total points here -- Mad Dog looks at more than scoring with these guys. Any ideas on future topics for the Mad Dog in this feature, e-mail us and we'll get Fred on the case.

By the way, Fred makes his ESPN.com audio chat debut with us Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, and will be chatting with NBA editor Eric Karabell each week. But we need a catchy name for the show. If you have one, tell us by clicking here and maybe we will use it.

Here's this week's Mad Dog's Top Five.

MAD DOG'S TOP 5 NBA THREESOMES
Ray Allen
Allen
Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen, and Sam Cassell
Bucks
Combined 62.1 points per game
"They are just so profilic in their shooting ability and one-on-one prowess. All three guys get to the line, and all are game-breakers -- no other team has this. Plus, the other two guys always know when to step aside and let one of them take over. And I'm not surprised that Ray Allen is this good. He has natural skills."

Kobe Bryant
Bryant
Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Glen Rice
Lakers
Combined for 67.8 points
"With Shaq doing what he's doing, this threesome is unstoppable. The amazing thing is that Glen Rice hasn't begun to shoot well yet. If he shoots well, watch out -- they'll win 68 games or more. This team is just hard to beat with Shaq scoring and rebounding and Kobe's all-around game and Rice. The inside game is outstanding while Milwaukee is more perimeter."

Jerry Stackhouse
Stackhouse
Grant Hill, Jerry Stackhouse and Jerome Williams
Pistons
Combined for 59.2 points
"You have to love the combo of Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse. Two guys who know how to play, let each other work, don't feel like they are stealing the other's thunder. They are prolific scorers. And these guys get to the line all the time. The third guy in Detroit could be Christian Laettner (13.7 points) or Lindsey Hunter (13) but I like Jerome Williams because he does so much for them. Rebounding, defense and energy, and he scores as well. Does the dirty work and still gets his 10 points a night."

Dirk Nowitzki
Nowitzki
Michael Finley, Dirk Nowitzki and Cedric Ceballos
Mavericks
Combined for 57.1 points
"You don't hear about this trio very much, maybe because they aren't winning, but they are playing very well. Finley should be an all-star. He's having a great year, has a few triple-doubles, is scoring more than 22 a night. Nowitzki has really come on to be a formidable scorer on offense. The guy makes his shots. And Ceballos is the garbage man that nobody wants. You never run a play for Cedric, which is a coach's dream, but he always scores and runs the floor. And he always has."

Ron Mercer
Mercer
Ron Mercer, Antonio McDyess and Nick Van Exel
Nuggets
Combined for 52.4 points
"All three are doing an outstanding job. McDyess has his turnaround jumper now and can put the ball on the floor. A complete player and good-shooting power forward who runs well. I like his ability to score. Nick the quick is clutch and hits the threes, and Mercer is also outstanding. Hopefully he's not just playing this well because it's a free agent year. I'd like to see him do this next year as well."

Reader comments so far on Mad Dog's Top Five:

Regarding Fred Carter's top trios in the league, I've noticed he missed out on Miami's trio. It's true that Tim Hardaway may be injured but once he gets back in the game, the trio of Hardaway, Alonzo Mourning and Jamal Mashburn may rank up there also. Mashburn has been having a phenomenal season so far due to league rule changes. Alonzo is the hardworker that he is and the best center in the East. I honestly feel that when it comes to crunch time this team will be scary basically because of those rule changes, people will have to lay off Hardaway because he is an outside threat or can drive by you.

Derrick
Toronto

I was lauding your inclusion of Dallas' trio of Finley, Dirk Diggler, and Ceballos. Finley is having an all-star year, and Nowitzki should win the NBA's Most Improved Player award. He is third in scoring among second-year players behind Vince Carter and Paul Pierce. Ceballos is just the ultimate garbage man.

I think that Tornoto's young trio of Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, and Antonio Davis deserves some credit as respectable triple threat as well.

Chris Myers
Dallas

How could Fred Carter leave the trio of Kevin Garnett, Stephon Marbury and Tom Gugliotta out of his list? Oh wait...

Mike Foley
Minneapolis, Minn.

What about Sprewell, Houston and Camby (or Ewing) for the best threesome? The only better threesome is Milwaukee.

Matt
New York City

Not bad, but I would have to include Sacramento's Webber, Williams and Divac. I think these three guys can wipe the floor with those guys from Dallas. And then there's San Antonio. How about Robinson, Duncan, and any guard that shows up that night. Duncan and Robinson are such a force that they just need that third guy to hit his threes when they dish it out to him. As for Portland, they're so stacked that it's hard to pick out just three. But you would have to go with Pippen, Wallace and Smith. Now that's a threesome.

Dave
Evanston, Ill.

In regard to NBA threesomes, one of the best might be one of the oldest: Karl Malone, John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek. They combine for 51.9 ppg and their combined assist/TO ratio is better than 2-1. These guys can still play. A young combo might be the Celtics' Antoine Walker, Paul Pierce and Kenny Anderson. They average 54 ppg, 4.16 steals per game, and are getting better.

Joe Pace
