Warriors end five-game losing skid

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Rookie Marc Jackson wasn't sure he would even make the Golden State Warriors out of training camp.

Now, it's going to be tough to keep him out of the starting lineup.

Jackson scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Warriors defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-99 Tuesday night, ending a five-game losing streak.

"He really works hard at his game and impressed us in camp," said Golden State coach Dave Cowens. "He shows you can play with heart. He's a presence on the floor. He had a monster game."

Antawn Jamison added 26 points for the Warriors, who had six players reach double figures, including all five starters. Mookie Blaylock scored 18 (to go with 10 assists), and Larry Hughes had 16. Chris Porter recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Jackson's effort was enough for the Warriors to overcome another huge night from Kevin Garnett, who led the Timberwolves with 29 points and 16 rebounds.

"I had heard he had a couple of good games, but I didn't think he'd pull it off against us," said Garnett. "It looks like they have a player there."

Garnett has scored 20 or more points in 11 straight games and has led the team in that department in nine straight.

"It's disappointing because we had a nice stretch of games going and we came out and shot it away with a performance like this," said Garnett. "They just took it to us."

William Avery scored 16 points and LaPhonso Ellis added 14 points for the Timberwolves, who had a two-game winning streak halted. They had won six of their previous seven.

Jackson, a 6-10 rookie, was inserted in the starting lineup only because the Warriors were besieged by injuries at the post position. He's now become one of Golden State's top offensive threats. He's averaging 23.5 points on 70 percent shooting in his last six games.

"The more I play, the better I get," said Jackson, who also had five blocked shots. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me to get in there and contribute. I'm glad for the opportunity, though it's unfortunate it came because of injuries."

Jackson's 31 points marked the first time a rookie reached the 30-point mark since Joe Smith, also with the Warriors, did it on Nov. 9, 1995 against Atlanta.

Golden State opened the third quarter with a 27-9 run to open a 21-point edge, its largest of the game. The Warriors maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

The Warriors opened the second quarter with a 16-2 run to put them up 44-29. Vonteego Cummings completed a three-point play to give the Warriors their 15-point edge just over three minutes into the period. That helped Golden State carry a 65-52 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The 65 points -- on 64 percent shooting -- also matched the season high for points in a half by the Warriors.

Golden State received a special dispensation from the NBA to sign a 13th player, which is expected to be 7-footer John Coker, in the wake of so many injuries. The Warriors already have the maximum three -- Chris Mullin, Chris Mills and Danny Fortson -- on the injured list, and both Erick Dampier and Adonal Foyle are unable to dress.
