Edwards hasn't played in U.S. pro league since '98

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Lynx selected Teresa Edwards, who has won gold medals in four Olympics, with the 14th pick in the 2003 WNBA draft on Friday.

Teresa Edwards
Teresa Edwards is the only U.S. basketball player, male or female, to compete in five Olympics.
Edwards, 38, is the only American basketball player, male or female, to compete in five Olympics. The point guard won gold medals in 1984, 1988, 1996 and 2000.

Edwards hasn't played professionally in the United States since the American Basketball League folded in December 1998.

Playing for the ABL's Atlanta Glory and Philadelphia Rage, she led the league in scoring in her final season, averaging 21 points per game.

Edwards was highly coveted among WNBA teams in 1999, but decided not to play in the league. She did, however, play in two Olympics with current Lynx Coach Suzie McConnell Serio, in 1988 and 1992.

"I'm really excited about playing for Suzie and I'm looking forward to joining the rest of my Lynx teammates,'' Edwards said.

McConnell Serio added, "Teresa Edwards, is in my opinion, the best guard to play the game.''
