  RECAP | BOX SCORE

MIAMI (AP) -- Sheri Sam had 19 points and seven rebounds as the expansion Miami Sol defeated the New York Liberty 57-41 Sunday night.

Marlies Askamp added eight points and 10 rebounds as Miami notched its first win over New York after two earlier defeats.

Miami (12-19) won its fourth straight home game, and assured itself of finishing at least .500 at home.

Tamika Whitmore had 10 points and 10 rebounds for New York (19-11), which had its six-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the second time in 14 games. The 41 points for New York were a franchise low.

The Sol won despite shooting only 27.1 percent (16-for-59) from the field. Miami held a big edge at the free throw line, where the Sol outscored the Liberty 21-6.

Miami led by 12 at the half and didn't allow New York to get closer than nine in the final 20 minutes.

New York also struggled with its shooting, making only 17 of 51 shots (33.3 percent).

New York, which had already clinched home court advantage in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, never led by more than three. After Miami tied the game at 16 with 8:50 to go in the first half, the Sol went on a 16-4 run to close the half.

Miami led 32-20 at the break and dominated on the offensive boards (11-4). The Liberty was also plagued by turnovers in the first 20 minutes, committing 13 that led to 14 points for the Sol.
