Reed dominates after poor All-Star outing

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Brandy Reed should have saved this one for the WNBA All-Star Game.

Reed scored 31 points, including seven during a decisive surge, as the Phoenix Mercury held on for an 86-76 victory over the Utah Starzz, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

No one had a more eventful All-Star break than Reed, Phoenix's leading scorer at 17.6 points per game. Initially snubbed for the All-Star Game, she was added by the league after fans in Phoenix threatened to boycott the game.

As the first player off the bench for the Western Conference, Reed had a game to forget Monday. She scored only three points on 1-of-11 shooting, but came back strong Wednesday.

The 6-foot-1 forward made 10-of-16 shots, 9-of-9 free throws and had the first seven points in a 9-2 surge that turned a three-point game into a 64-54 lead with 7:25 remaining.

The Mercury were without coach Cheryl Miller, who is recovering after having left knee surgery Monday. She will be on crutches for four weeks. Assistant Tom Lewis filled in for Miller, who is expected to return Friday against Los Angeles.
