SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Tangela Smith and Kedra Holland-Corn scored 19 points apiece Saturday night as the Sacramento Monarchs defeated the Detroit Shock 108-96 in a game that set a WNBA record for total points.

The victory improved Sacramento to 7-0 at home. The Monarchs (11-5) established a franchise-high point total in winning for the sixth time in seven games. The previous high for points in an WNBA game was last year when Utah defeated Detroit 104-94 in double overtime.

Detroit (7-7) had its three-game road winning streak snapped. The Shock, who came back from a 21-point deficit in the second half, are halfway through a six-game road trip over a two-week period.

Ahead by eight points at the half, the Monarchs used the scoring of Smith and Kedra Holland-Corn, plus the playmaking skills of Ticha Penicheiro, to build the lead to 88-68 with 7:44 left.

Detroit cut the lead to 101-96 with 52 seconds left. The Monarchs connected on 34-of-46 free throws, including seven in the final 45 seconds, to hold on for the win.

Wendy Palmer had 20 points and nine rebounds for Detroit before fouling out. Elena Tornikidou scored 16 points and Tamicha Jackson added 14.

Penicheiro finished with 17 points and 14 assists. Yolanda Griffith added 18 points and 11 rebounds, Ruthie Bolton-Holifield scored 16 and Lady Hardmon had 11.

The Monarchs used a 13-2 run late in the first half to take a 52-44 lead into halftime.

Griffith had 13 first-half points and Smith added 10, while Penicheiro contributed nine points and eight assists for Sacramento, which shot 66 percent.
