NEW YORK (AP) -- Claudia Maria das Neves scored a career-high 16 points as the Detroit Shock beat the New York Liberty 67-63 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

A starting guard for the Brazilian national team, das Neves was 5-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

Dominique Canty added 14 points for Detroit (5-5), which has won three of four.

Tamika Whitmore had 14 points for New York (4-6), which committed three of its 21 turnovers in the final two minutes.

Tari Phillips' 3-pointer brought New York within 65-63 with 7.2 seconds left then Canty made two free throws. With six seconds remaining, Phillips stepped out of bounds as she brought the ball upcourt.

Detroit was called for a five-second violation trying to inbound the ball, but Crystal Robinson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Wendy Palmer had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, which played its fourth game in six nights.

Sue Wicks hit a jumper to bring the Liberty within 52-51 with 4:40 remaining, but New York did not make another field goal until Whitmore's layup made it 61-55 with 43 seconds left.

Detroit made 25 of 35 free throws, including 19 in the second half. The Liberty were 9-of-11 from the line and were outrebounded 36-25.

Trailing 31-28 at halftime, New York went on a 12-2 run with Teresa Weatherspoon and Vickie Johnson each scoring five points. Canty then scored seven points in a 16-6 run that made it 49-46 with 7:12 remaining.

Robinson's three-point play snapped a six-minute scoring drought for the Liberty and tied the game at 49.
