Wimbledon champs do it again Associated Press NEW YORK -- Rennae Stubbs and Lisa Raymond finally lost a set, but not a match at the U.S. Open.
The Wimbledon doubles champions won the Open title Sunday with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Kimberly Po-Messerli and Nathalie Tauziat.
Stubbs and Raymond had swept through the first five matches here without dropping a set. But after Po-Messerli and Tauziat drew even in the championship match, the No. 1 seeds put it away.
The winners had defeated Po-Messerli and Tauziat in the semifinals en route to the championship at Wimbledon.
"Anytime you get into a final like that, there's tons of nerves," Raymond said. "Even though we had a win against them at Wimbledon, this is a different surface. Even though we won the first set easily, it was a battle. We just dug deep and fought."
It was Stubbs' second doubles title at the Open this year. Earlier, she teamed with Todd Woodbridge to defeat Raymond and Leander Paes in the mixed doubles.
Stubbs saw the irony in first beating Raymond in the mixed doubles and then teaming with her to win the women's event.
"Today, I was very nervous, even though we beat them at Wimbledon," Stubbs said. "I really wanted to get the win for Lisa. I owed her one." Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories |
