WTC flag to fly during U.S. Open

Associated Press

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The American flag recovered from the World Trade Center and raised by U.S. Marines in Afghanistan will fly at the U.S. Open starting from opening night Monday.

New Yorkers Tony Bennett, Queen Latifah and Judd Hirsch will lead an on-court evening tribute to honor the city's uniformed and civilian heroes from the past year.

Honor guards from the New York and Port Authority Police Departments, New York Fire Department, and the U.S. Marine Corps will participate in the ceremony. The New York Police Academy cadets will carry the U.S. colors as well as flags representing the 60 homelands of the tennis players.

The "Heroes" flag from ground zero will be raised atop Arthur Ashe Stadium and be part of the pre-match ceremony for the women's singles championship on Sept. 7. It will be lowered following the men's singles championship Sept. 8.
