Roddick picked for Davis Cup

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Teenage sensation Andy Roddick and former Harvard All-American James Blake were chosen Thursday for the U.S. Davis Cup team that will play India on Sept. 21-23 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Captain Patrick McEnroe selected doubles specialists Don Johnson and Jared Palmer. Veteran Todd Martin and 18-year-old Robby Ginepri were also chosen for the team, and Jim Courier will assist McEnroe as coach.

Roddick and Blake are expected to play singles -- their first meaningful Davis Cup matches as the U.S. team makes a transition to a younger roster. Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi have said they will no longer play Davis Cup.

The match will determine whether the Americans stay with the 16-team world group or are relegated to zonal play, which would make them ineligible for the 2002 title.

Roddick, 19, has won three tournaments and soared into the top 20 this year. He played his first Davis Cup match in February against Switzerland, but his victory was meaningless because the U.S. team had already lost the match.

Blake was on the verge of upsetting Australian star Lleyton Hewitt at the U.S. Open last week before wilting in the heat and losing the final two sets.

During the match Hewitt erupted in a tirade that included comments widely interpreted as racial. Hewitt said his remarks were misinterpreted.
