| Clement topples Prinosil in Hamlet Cup Associated Press | |||
COMMACK, N.Y. -- Arnaud Clement, a surprise finalist at the
Australian Open this year, advanced to the quarterfinals of the
Hamlet Cup on Thursday with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over David
Prinosil.
"I was totally relaxed," said the 23-year-old Clement, the
first Frenchman to reach the Australian final since Jean Borotra
won the Grand Slam event in 1928. "I want to play more relaxed as
the matches go on. That's my game."
Next up for the fourth-seeded Clement will be Fernando Meligeni,
who beat Alberto Martin 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 Thursday.
Rain forced postponement of Thursday's other two scheduled
second-round matches.
Ninth-seeded Thomas Enqvist was to play Julien Boutter and
Anthony Dupuis was to meet Thomas Johansson. Both matches were
rescheduled for Friday.
Clement, who is seeded 12th in next week's U.S. Open, hit 63
percent of his first serves and had just three double-faults.
"His rallies from the baseline did not bother me at all," said
Clement, who reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon. "My attitude is
different now. I'm trying to please myself on the court, but I
still have to show more enthusiasm."
Meligeni, who had to qualify for this tournament, called a
medical timeout in the second set with the score 2-2.
"I had a lot of pain in the left shoulder," said the
30-year-old from Brazil who reached the third round of the French
Open this year. "After the treatment I felt good and served a lot
better. If I hadn't stopped the match, I probably would not have
been able to go on. That's the one thing I don't want to do ...
walk away because of an injury.
"When play resumed, I pulled back a little on my serve and hit
the ball softer. The injury is from all the matches I've played in
my career. It's all part of the game."
