STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Magnus Norman's hip injury, which
sidelined him several weeks this year, might knock the Swedish
tennis player out of the U.S. Open and the Davis Cup semifinals.
"This is a serious injury because it's coming back all the
time," Norman said Saturday. "It's difficult to make a prognosis
because it's an unusual injury.
"There's a big risk that I will miss the U.S. Open. There is
not so much left of the season and I'm starting to realize that my
tennis year could be over."
Norman, 25, returned to Sweden after losing 6-4, 6-1 to Lleyton
Hewitt in the first round of the Tennis Masters Series in
Cincinnati on Wednesday.
If he needs surgery, Norman will be sidelined at least three
months, coach Fredrik Rosengren said. A decision will be made
Monday after a consultation with a doctor in Stockholm.
The U.S. Open starts in two weeks, and Sweden will play
Australia in the Davis Cup semifinals Sept. 21-23 in Sydney.
Norman, last year's French Open finalist, withdrew from
Wimbledon because of the sore hip. He came back a month later and
reached the semifinals in the Swedish Open at Bastad, where he won
his first ATP Tour title in 1997.
The injury problem started last December, just before the
Australian Open. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories |
