Saddlebrook Resort new home for WTA

The Women's Tennis Association agreed to a 10-year deal that would move its headquarters to Saddlebrook Golf and Tennis Resort in Wesley Chapel, Fla., about 20 miles north of Tampa.

The agreement was reached over the weekend and is expected to be announced by WTA officials Monday at Wimbledon.

Under the agreement, the WTA would move its offices from Stamford, Conn., and St. Petersburg, Fla., to a new, 13,000 square foot square facility near the front entrance of the Saddlebrook Resort. In addition, there are plans to build a new 5,000-seat tennis stadium on nearby property, allowing a WTA Tour event to be held at Saddlebrook.

Tom Dempsey, president of Saddlebrook, who has been at Wimbledon for several days negotiating with WTA officials, declined comment. Saddlebrook beat out sites in South Carolina and Atlanta to be the new home of the WTA.

Currently, tour players Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic train at Saddlebrook.
