Norman pulls out with hip injury

LONDON -- Magnus Norman pulled out of next week's Wimbledon on Thursday with a hip injury.

The Swedish player is the latest to join a long list of tennis stars unable to compete in the Grand Slam event that begins on Monday.

Norman, who was seeded 18th, was scheduled to play his first-round match against Lars Burgsmuller of Germany.

Among other men who have withdrawn from Wimbledon because of medical problems are Albert Costa of Spain, Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil, Alex Corretja of Spain and Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador.

Lapentti, the 30th seed, also pulled out Thursday, with an elbow injury.

Slovakia's Karol Kucera also was forced to pull out ,with an arm injury.

Norman's hip problem started in December, before the Australian Open. Despite a series of tests and a three-week rest from the ATP tour, doctors have so far been unable to establish what causes the pain. New tests are expected next week.
