Woodbridge also has new doubles partner Associated Press | |||
WIMBLEDON, England -- Former Wimbledon semifinalist Todd
Woodbridge was one of 15 players who qualified for the grass-court
Grand Slam the hard way, via qualifying.
The Australian, who has won six Wimbledon doubles title with
compatriot Mark Woodforde, beat his final qualifying opponent Johan
Ortegren of Sweden in just 50 minutes, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 Wednesday.
Fellow Australian Scott Draper also qualified.
Woodbridge is the highest profile and most experienced of the
men's qualifiers to make the field at Wimbledon, which begins
Monday. He reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 1997, and won the
doubles title last year with the now-retired Woodforde.
Woodbridge is the top seed this year for the doubles with new
partner Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden.
Canadian Daniel Nestor, the 28-year-old who reached the second
round at Wimbledon last year and the fourth round in 1999, also
qualified.
Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland qualified by defeating Zimbabwean
Wayne Black in five sets in his final match.
Also qualifying were: Taylor Dent, Bob Bryan and Cecil Mamiit of
the United States; Stephane Huet and Michael Llodra of France;
Neville Godwin of South Africa; Fredrik Jonsson of Sweden; Julian
Knowle of Austria; Yong-Il Yoon of Korea; Luke Milligan of Britain;
and Artem Derepasko of Russia.
