Thursday, July 17 Serving it up from Roland Garros
ESPN.com news services
Arnaud Di Pasquale serves to Marat Safin on Monday. Safin defeated Di Pasquale 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Gustavo Kuerten needs time to recover from the
French Open and will skip Wimbledon again.
The three-time French Open champion had hip surgery in February
and returned to action in April. He said the French Open wore him
out and he needs time to rest and rehab his hip.
Kuerten's 17-match winning streak at Roland Garros ended in a
6-4, 7-5, 6-4 loss to 20th-seeded Albert Costa on Sunday.
"I'm really still not strong enough to recover so fast,'' said
Kuerten, when asked if he planned to play Wimbledon, which starts
June 24. "So another time I'm going to have to skip this event.''
"I would like to play, it's not that I don't want to play,''
the No. 7-seeded Kuerten said. "But for me it would be a big
risk.''
His upset at the French Open came at the end of a rough week.
Kuerten's second-round match against Italy's Davide Sanguinetti
went five sets, and Fernando Gonzalez stretched the Brazilian to
four sets in the third round.
"I really pushed so hard, as you saw today, and the other
matches,'' Kuerten said. "I have to take it easy.''
After winning a second straight French Open last year, Kuerten
skipped Wimbledon, pulling out with a sore groin.

Dear diary
Serena Williams wants her MTV.
The music network featured Williams on its reality show MTV
Diary.
"I was really excited. It's when MTV follows you around,''
Williams said. "It was a lot of fun.''
The episode was filmed in March during a tournament in Miami,
where Serena beat her older sister, Venus, in the semifinals.
Williams went on to beat Jennifer Capriati in the final.
"It was just like a dream come true for them because I won the
tournament,'' Serena Williams said.
The show also includes Serena in the kitchen making gumbo with
her mom, playing with her dog and working out at a gym.
Serena Williams, who beat Russia's Vera Zvonereva 4-6, 6-0, 6-1,
in a third-round match Sunday, said she hasn't seen the show, which
aired recently.
"They're going to send me some tapes,'' she said. "I can't, I
can definitely wait to get back home.''
She faces France's Mary Pierce in the quarterfinals.

And she still didn't win: Russian Elena Dementieva must like to serve.
A little too much.
The No. 13-seeded player was mistakenly allowed to serve
back-to-back games in her fourth-round match against Argentina's
Clarisa Fernandez.
What organizers described in a statement as "an unbelievably
rare event in the context of a Grand Slam tournament,'' went
something like this:
Dementieva served the last game of the second set, which
Fernandez won. Fernandez, who was supposed to serve the next game,
took a bathroom break between sets.
When Fernandez returned, Dementieva served yet again.
Nobody noticed the mistake.
The extra service game didn't help the Russian. Fernandez went
on to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Pen pals: Fans of Alex Corretja share their feelings
with the 28-year-old Spaniard.
"They come and watch me practice and they send me letters to
the locker room,'' Corretja said.
Asked what the letters are about, Corretja smiled.
"Private ones,'' he said. "Naughty ones? No, no. Just casual
ones.''

ANDRE AGASSI
On nearly losing:
"I certainly dug a big hole for myself. A lot had to do with the way he was playing. But down two sets and a break, I mean, the good news is it can't get any worse."

SERENA WILLIAMS
On getting frustrated: ``When I'm down, if anything, I hit harder. I always fight. I'm always fighting and
hustling.''

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN
On beating Xavier Malisse:
"He took a mental blow when I won five games in succession
in the second set. I really needed to win these badly."
