MELBOURNE, Australia -- Even though the lower half of the women's draw is the weaker one, there are some fun matchups developing. The two matchups that have caught everyone's imaginations are the two U.S. veterans, Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles, taking on the youngsters from Belgium, Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters.
Monica Seles (4) vs. Justine Henin
Lindsay Davenport (2) vs. Kim Clijsters (15)
Anna Kournikova (8) vs. Barbara Rittner
Jennifer Capriati (12) vs. Marta Marrero The big three are still in: Martina Hingis, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Those outside of that top group are Amelie Mauresmo (13), a finalist two years ago, Amanda Coetzer (10) and unseeded Paola Suarez. The person with the toughest road to the finals is Hingis. If she's going to get to the finals she might have to beat Serena then Venus back to back, which she's had trouble doing. Also, Hingis has had it easy so far. She hasn't been challenged yet and that could cause her some problems as she gets to these more difficult matches. She might find herself wishing she'd had a few challenges along the way to help her prepare.
