U.S. veterans face young Belgians in fourth round

By Pam Shriver

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Even though the lower half of the women's draw is the weaker one, there are some fun matchups developing. The two matchups that have caught everyone's imaginations are the two U.S. veterans, Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles, taking on the youngsters from Belgium, Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters.

Former WTA Tour pro Pam Shriver is providing ESPN.com with in-depth analysis throughout the Australian Open. Shriver, a tennis analyst for ESPN, reached a high ranking of No. 3 in singles with 21 titles and in doubles she won 112 titles including 22 Grand Slams.

Monica Seles (4) vs. Justine Henin
Looking at Henin playing Seles, many people are picking Henin to win. She's won the two warm-up tournaments, the Australian Hardcourt Championships and Canberra International, coming into the Australian Open. The question mark for the teen-ager is whether she is getting tired. It's really not easy playing three straight weeks and averaging almost a match a day. Also, Seles is not playing her best tennis.

Lindsay Davenport (2) vs. Kim Clijsters (15)
Kim Clijsters, also known as Lleyton Hewitt's girlfriend, has not dropped a set so far and is one of the best power players in the game. She's going up against the most consistent power player in Davenport. Davenport is the favorite. However, she went three sets in each of her opening rounds and on the court she's been pretty grumpy. But in the past, Davenport usually rises to the occasion in these rounds, so expect her to win.

Anna Kournikova (8) vs. Barbara Rittner
The popular, yet titleless, Kournikova of Russia should beat Germany's Rittner.

Jennifer Capriati (12) vs. Marta Marrero
Capriati is the heavy favorite to win her matchup with the young Spaniard Marrero, who is playing in her first Australian Open.

The big three are still in: Martina Hingis, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Those outside of that top group are Amelie Mauresmo (13), a finalist two years ago, Amanda Coetzer (10) and unseeded Paola Suarez.

The person with the toughest road to the finals is Hingis. If she's going to get to the finals she might have to beat Serena then Venus back to back, which she's had trouble doing. Also, Hingis has had it easy so far. She hasn't been challenged yet and that could cause her some problems as she gets to these more difficult matches. She might find herself wishing she'd had a few challenges along the way to help her prepare.
