Foot injury forces Seles to withdraw

Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Monica Seles, a four-time Australian Open champion, has been forced to withdraw from the first Grand Slam of the new year because of a foot injury.

Monica Seles
Monica Seles won the Australian Open in 1991, 1992, 1993 and in 1996.

An injured right foot has sidelined the former world No. 1 since October last year. She advised Australian Open organizers Tuesday (Monday in the U.S.) that she was unable to play at the tournament starting Jan. 17 at Melbourne Park.

Tournament chief executive Paul McNamee said it was disappointing to lose a sentimental favorite like Seles.

"We wish Monica well for a full recovery and hope to see her out here next year," he said.

The 26-year-old won the Australian Open in 1991, 1992, 1993 and in 1996, which was her first Grand Slam title after a two-year absence from the tour.

She has also won two French Open and two U.S. Open titles.
