United joins Fire in CONCACAF semis

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS -- Goalkeeper Tom Presthus stopped a penalty shot in extra time as D.C. United beat Olimpia of Honduras 1-0 in a quarterfinal match of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Wednesday night at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Ben Olsen
D.C. United's Ben Olsen got a yellow card for pushing off on Rudy Alberto Williams' face.

In the second game, Necaxa of Mexico beat Saprissa of Costa Rica 3-2.

The winners will meet in a semifinal Friday, with the Chicago Fire playing Alajeula of Costa Rica in the other semifinal.

Presthus dove to his right to stop a penalty kick from Arnold Cruz that was awarded when Presthus received a yellow card for upending Wilmer Velasquez as he ran toward the ball.

United's Jamie Moreno had tapped in a crossing pass in front of the net from Carey Talley in the 68th minute for the game's only score.

Presthus' penalty kick save was his second stellar play in the final 10 minutes of the match. In the 85th minute, Olimpia's Denilson Costa broke free down the left side and got a shot off from 7 meters away. Presthus dove to his left to stop that one.

United outshot Olimpia 12-10 and controlled the action through most of the game.

In the first half, Moreno knocked a header off the crossbar and Ben Olson had another header in front of the goal thwarted by Olimpia defender Jorge Samuel Caballero, who headed the ball off the goal line.

Olimpia's best first-half chance came at the 20-minute mark when Velasquez, the Honduran National League's leading scorer, controlled a loose ball in front of the net but sent his shot sailing wide to the left.
