Kotschau nets winner in 77th minute

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Ritchie Kotschau scored the game-winner in the 77th minute, spoiling Giovanni Savarese's debut with San Jose, as the Tampa Bay Mutiny beat the Earthquakes 2-1 Saturday.

Kotschau took a pass from Carlos Valderrama down the left side, and angled a crossing shot toward the goal. The ball went over goalkeeper Joe Cannon's head, hit the top of the right post and went into the back of the net for Kotschau's first score of the season.

The Earthquakes (5-13-8) matched a club record with their fifth straight loss, despite holding a 23-8 advantage in shots.

Savarese, MLS's fifth all-time leading goal scorer, had an assist on Khodadad Azizi's goal in the 52nd minute.

Mamadou Diallo, the league's leading scorer, gave Tampa Bay (14-10-2) a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.

Mutiny goalkeeper Scott Garlick had 10 saves, while Cannon had one.
