The MetroStars, 7-0-2 in their last nine games, lead the Eastern Division with 41 points (13-7-2). Miami, 0-3-1 in its last four, fell to 7-11-5 and remained in third place with 26 points.

The MetroStars had the better chances in the first half. After near-misses by Roy Meyers on a rebound in the 30th minute and Petter Villegas from close range in the 38th minute, they converted.

Meyers sent a pinpoint pass through the middle to Comas that split the two Miami central defenders and sent Comas in alone at the top of the box.

Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rinmando charged off his line. But Comas pushed the ball wide to his left, went around Rimando and cut the ball back into an empty net.

The MetroStars took command in the early moments of the second half, scoring three goals within 10 minutes to open a 4-0 lead.

Adolfo Valencia made it 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 49th minute after Tim Sahaydak pulled Villegas down in the box. Villegas scored in the 54th minute when he knocked in a rebound of a shot by Valencia. Comas made it 4-0 in the 59th minute when he ran onto a long pass from Mark Chung and rolled a shot under Rimando.

Miami ended the shutout bid in the 60th minute when Jay Heaps headed in a cross from Martin Machon. The Fusion added another goal in the 89th minute by Roy Lassiter.
