EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Chris Albright and Jaime Moreno scored second-half goals Wednesday night to lift D.C. United into a 2-2 tie with the New York-New Jersey MetroStars.

Moreno's goal on a header in the 86th minute brought United, the defending MLS champion, into the tie, but they remain in last place in the Eastern Division with a 3-10-4 record.

The MetroStars (7-7-1) opened the scoring in the 18th minute after United midfielder Richie Williams received a yellow card for fouling Ramiro Corrales just outside the box.

Tab Ramos' free kick curved into the box and Clint Mathis headed the ball just under the bar for his seventh goal of the season and fourth in six games since joining the MetroStars.

New York-New Jersey made it 2-0 five minutes later when Mathis made a run down the right side and cut the ball back to Adolfo Valencia on the left. Valencia was unable to get a shot off, but sent the ball back to Ramos just outside the box.

Ramos measured the shot and rolled it just inside the right post from 22 yards away. It was the first goal for the oft-injured midfielder since Aug. 19, 1998.

D.C. got on the scoreboard in the 51st minute when Moreno carried the ball into the box and deflected a shot off a MetroStars defender. Albright was able to get his foot on the deflected shot and redirect it past MetroStars goalkeeper Mike Ammann.

After United tied the match, they almost scored a minute later but A.J. Wood's header hit the cross bar.
