PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Former Galaxy forward Clint Mathis and Adolfo Valencia scored goals 12 minutes apart as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars defeated Los Angeles 2-0 Saturday night.

Goalkeeper Mike Ammann made nine saves, six in the first half, for his second shutout of the season as the MetroStars (6-6-0) won their third straight.

Mathis outjumped Galaxy defender Paul Caligiuri to get his head on a pass from defender Dan Hernandez, one of three other former Galaxy players in the MetroStars starting lineup. Mathis sprinted past Caligiuri, then fired a shot past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman into the center of the net three minutes after halftime.

The goal was Mathis' fifth on the season and his second in three matches with the MetroStars. He was chosen by the MetroStars in a May 16 dispersal draft ordered by the league after high-scoring Mexican forward Luis Hernandez was signed by MLS and assigned to the Galaxy.

Valencia scored his team-leading seventh goal in the 60th minute off an assist from Roy Myers, acquired from the Galaxy in a May 19 trade made necessary by the Hernandez deal.

Los Angeles is 1-2-3 since it began to divest players so the Mexican striker could be added to its roster.

The Galaxy led 17-13 in shots and 9-5 in shots on goal. Hartman made three saves before 16,876 at the Rose Bowl

Los Angeles (6-2-6) played without half of its customary defensive quartet. Robin Fraser, the 1999 MLS defender of the year, missed his third consecutive match with a severely sprained left ankle, and Greg Vanney was with the U.S. national team at the U.S. Cup tournament.

Leading scorer Cobi Jones also was with the national team.

The MetroStars played without midfielder Lothar Matthaus, who is with Germany's national team as it prepares for the European Championships.
