EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Steve Jolley and Clint Mathis scored goals a minute apart late in the first half as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars beat the Chicago Fire 4-1 Saturday night.
A crowd of 41,609 attended the game at the Meadowlands, the
largest for an MLS game this season.
Jolley scored in the 34th minute and Mathis in the 35th to help
the MetroStars score three goals in a half for the first time since
a win over Chicago in 1998.
Mark Chung's fourth-minute goal gave the MetroStars a 1-0 lead.
The Fire, who had won three of their last four, outshot the
MetroStars 14-5 in the first 45 minutes, but MetroStars goalkeeper
Mike Ammann made several tough saves.
Ante Razov scored on a penalty shot in the 71st minute for
Chicago, his league-leading 11th goal. Razov was awarded the shot
after he was tripped by Daniel Hernandez.
The MetroStars closed out the scoring five minutes later on a
penalty shot by Adolfo Valencia, who had been pulled down by
defender C.J. Brown.
